Log in with a username instead of email in Laravel 10.

Step 1

Add username the field to the users’ table; for that, create a migration to add a field.

php artisan make:migration add_username_field_in_users_table

This command will create a file inside database\migrations folder.

Now update the file with the code below.

<?php

use Illuminate\Database\Migrations\Migration;
use Illuminate\Database\Schema\Blueprint;
use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Schema;

return new class extends Migration
{
    /**
     * Run the migrations.
     *
     * @return void
     */
    public function up()
    {
        Schema::table('users', function (Blueprint $table) {
            $table->string('username')->after('name');
        });
    }

    /**
     * Reverse the migrations.
     *
     * @return void
     */
    public function down()
    {
        Schema::table('users', function (Blueprint $table) {
            $table->dropColumn('username');
        });
    }
};

Now run the migration in order to add username in the users’ table.

php artisan migrate

Step 2

Now update the register form so that the user can choose a username for login.

Open the register view file resources/views/auth/register.blade.php and update the following code.

@extends('layouts.app')

@section('content')
<div class="container">
    <div class="row justify-content-center">
        <div class="col-md-8">

                <div class="card-header">{{ __('Register') }}</div>

                <div class="card-body">
                    <form method="POST" action="{{ route('register') }}">

                        <div class="row mb-3">
                            <label for="name" class="col-md-4 col-form-label text-md-end">{{ __('Name') }}</label>

                            <div class="col-md-6">

                                @error('name')

                                @enderror
                            </div>
                        </div>

Next, we have to update the User Model, update the User Model open file app/Models/User.php , and update the following code.
